Gavin Newsom has compared Donald Trump to the controversial French monarch Marie Antoinette as he brutally trolled the president for his decision to continue construction on his ballroom while the rest of the country faces uncertainty amid the government shutdown.
The California Governor's press office wrote on X: “TRUMP “MARIE ANTOINETTE” SAYS, “NO HEALTH CARE FOR YOU PEASANTS, BUT A BALLROOM FOR THE QUEEN!” It's the latest in a string of posts brutally parodying the president's trademark all-caps writing style on social media.
The caption accompanied a seemingly AI-generated image of a portrait of Trump dressed as Marie Antoinette, sporting an 18th-century dress and wig. Americans woke up to another government shutdown on Wednesday after Trump failed to negotiate a deal to keep government programs running before the October 1 deadline. It comes after JD Vance's 'shameful' act after he was sent in to defend 'panicking' Trump's move.

The White House has threatened mass layoffs of federal workers, rather than simply the normal furlough, while many offices will be shuttered, some permanently, as the economic fallout could ripple across the nation. But one thing that won't be impacted is the construction of Trump's White House ballroom.
The president, who has a well-known penchant for gilded splendor, is adding a 90,000 square foot, $200 million East Wing addition to the White House with his new ballroom. As the government shutdown sees federal agencies closing, work will continue.
"There will not be a stoppage of ballroom work when the shutdown occurs," a White House official told ABC News. The White House has previously said that the construction of the ballroom is funded by private donations.
"Work will continue to be performed as the funds currently supporting are not tied to a FY26 enacted appropriation," the White House official added. Marie Antoinette was France's final queen and ruled at the time of the French Revolution in 1789.

She became widely unpopular during her reign due to her extravagant lifestyle in court and her lavish spending while the country faced a growing debt and people went hungry. Eventually, she was beheaded by revolutionaries.
Newsom's press office also trolled Trump over the construction of the ballroom in an earlier post. “DEMOCRATS: Lets make health care more affordable — lets keep the ongoing funding!" The X post read.
The office wrote “MAGA,” as replying “No,” and President Trump as replying, “‘Go F--- Yourself’ (actual quote) and I’m gonna keep building my ballroom.”
Trump has previously gushed about the construction of his ballroom. When asked last month about how he was coping following the assassination of conservative activist and Trump ally Charlie Kirk, the president responded “I think very good" before suddenly switching the topic to his ballroom.
"And by the way, right there you see all the trucks. They just started construction of the new ballroom for the White House, which is something they’ve been trying to get for about 150 years," he continued. "And it's gonna be a beauty. It'll be an absolutely magnificent structure.”
