The veteran Democrat is the first US senator to describe Israel’s assault on the territory as a genocide.

It comes a day after the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

While critical of the Israeli government, Sanders previously refrained from using the term genocide, telling CNN in July that it was a “legal term”.
