I’m probably pretty late to this, but this may not be associated with negligence or gun safety, but with suicide prevention. If someone is in crisis but doesn’t want to ask a friend to hold onto their gun, they can ask them to hold the key. Similarly, if they don’t have anyone to hold the key, studies have shown that in a moment of suicidal ideation, the brief seemingly inconsequential step of having to find the key, unlock their weapon, and then load it has given people those precious extra seconds to rethink the decision. A similar tactic is lock boxes for knives or medication. The company I work for gives out both for free to anyone experiencing a mental health crisis during safety planning. On top of this, if the picture’s recent, September is Suicide Prevention Awareness month.
Always remember 988 is there, and if you are lucky enough to live on a state that requires county designated mental health agencies, their crisis teams are there to help.
