Steve Witkoff, Trump’s Middle East envoy, has confirmed that Putin agreed to “robust security guarantees” during negotiations in Alaska.
Speaking to CNN, Witkoff said that Putin would not allow Ukraine to join Nato, but added that: “assuming that Ukraine could agree to that [no Nato admission], we were able to win the following concession: that the United States could offer Article-5 like protection”.
His comments come as Zelensky prepares to meet Donald Trump in the White House tomorrow.
The Ukrainian President will be accompanied by a slew of European leaders who have stressed that a security guarantee will be crucial to securing any deal.
EU President Ursula Von der Leyen reiterated that international borders “must not be changed by force” and said it would be up to Zelensky to make territorial decisions.

The Prime Minister Keir Starmer will join President Zelenskyy, and European leaders, for a meeting with President Trump at the White House tomorrow.
This follows the Prime Minister commending President Trump’s efforts to end Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine, reasserting his position that the path to peace cannot be decided without President Zelenskyy, and co-chairing a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing this afternoon to discuss the progress to provide Ukraine with robust security guarantees in the event of any deal.
At the meeting that will take place at the White House tomorrow, the Prime Minister, with other European partners, stands ready to support this next phase of further talks and will reaffirm that his backing for Ukraine will continue as long as it takes.
