He fell off a ship and was picked up by the NVA, interned in a POW camp he played dumb to the point that the guards let him roam about instead of being confined to a cell, allowing Hegdahl to meet with another prisoner who was an expert in memory tricks, using the tune “Old Macdonald had a farm” Hegdahl was able to recite names, serial numbers, and other information for over 250 prisoners after being released as a propaganda move by the NVA.
FYI, Seaman Hegdahl memorized all of the names and addresses of his fellow captives and when he was released early, he traveled on his own expense to all of the families to give them an update on their condition. He is a hero and is to be commended for his service.
