Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.
Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.
"Ivana Trump told her lawyer Michael Kennedy that from time to time her husband reads a book of Hitler's collected speeches, "My New Order," which he keeps in a cabinet by his bed"
Ah yes, the authoritarian right wing leader who led a violent mob to attack the government in a failed coup d'etat and then used his prosecution for said attempted coup to rally support behind him, claiming a corrupt government of socialists was weaponizing the government against him. He came to power, promising to crack down on immigration, diversity, and sexual degeneracy (in particular a burgeoning community of trans people, literature about which, he rushed to censor once in power). He promised to put his own country first, claiming that his country had been stabbed in the back by a cabal of elites out to destroy it from within. He also exploited legitimate discontent after inflation rocked the country's economy.
While many feared his rise to power, others assured that his rhetoric was just bluster. He was just rallying his base, surely he didn't intend to follow through on such brazen, irresponsible actions.
Once in power, he rushed to dismantle the checks and balances that would restrict the power of his executive branch, running roughshod over all norms and laws across the board. He vastly increased the size of the military and federal law enforcement. He then used that newly empowered law enforcement to go after his countries own people, using thuggish tactics. Disappearing people, sending them to large, inhumane detention centers.
That's not even to mention the rampant corruption, or the weird fringe, irresponsible theories about health and science promoted by their government, because of quacks, elevated to positions they were grossly unqualified for because the government valued loyalty over merit.
