Wednesday morning my wife and i woke up to the road crew doing some drainage work in the easement on my farm. it is annoying as fuck when they don't let us know what is going on, but, hey...
well, the work went on until Friday morning and we thought nothing of it.
i left to go to the village and instantly noticed that the 100+ years old stone "fence", or, the original line of demarcation, if you will, was gone. not just covered in dirt or bumped around, but gone. and you could see where the operator specifically went and picked each of the rocks from their spots every ten or so feet along my entire property line.
my wife called the road commission and then i went up there and met with the commissioner and explained what happened.
well, they brought the rocks back.
someone thought they were going to get away with stealing this much stone.
pay attention to your property. people will try to get away with anything. when the commissioner heard my story he just put his head down and sighed... i am sure he had no idea what had happened but he took full responsibility and got me my property back. i will say, i didn't realize how many they took. most were 75% buried so it was hard to know how big they were/are.
the silver lining is now when i go put them back they will be 100% above ground and much easier to see.
I worked for a construction company years ago and something similar happened. They wrecked a stone wall that was probably in place for a hundred years… possibly. They took me off of another job to join an older guy in hand placing the wall back together. I think it took about a week or so. We had no one watching over us and it was in a beautiful area. Most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.
Sounds like the village I grew up in rural Alaska . Two elders worked their asses off all year long to have the biggest most successful garden in the village. (Above the Arctic Circle that’s a lot of hard work and resources). Just to have some younger couple come by at 11 pm at night to steal lettuce radishes and carrots. The two elders were taking a late night stroll too the local lake. When there were driving back they caught them red handed. Imaging being in your late 40’s early 50s and steal from elders. Anyway they grew their own shit the the next year
