Outriders 2, codenamed Project Gemini, was nearly finished but cancelled in early June, as reported by Insider sources.

The cancellation came as a surprise to the development team, who found out at the same time as the public.

The original Outriders game was praised for its strong looter-shooter mechanics but struggled with technical issues and limited live-service features.

People Can Fly also cancelled a second project, Bifrost, which reportedly lacked originality and excitement internally.

Outriders 2: A Nearly Finished Sequel That Never Was

Outriders 2 was one of the two major projects cancelled by People Can Fly earlier this year, according to reports from gaming insiders.

Known internally as Project Gemini, the sequel was reportedly close to completion before it was abruptly shelved in early June. This decision shocked the development team, who reportedly learned about the cancellation at the same time as fans and the public.

People Can Fly’s first Outriders game launched with strong expectations and a fresh take on the looter-shooter genre. Its unique combat philosophy, where cover was meant for enemies and not the player, earned it praise and a dedicated fanbase. However, technical issues at launch and a lack of live-service content like battle passes or microtransactions limited its long-term success.

Despite these setbacks, the original game had a solid foundation, and many hoped the sequel would build upon it. The cancellation of Outriders 2, especially so late in development, has left fans feeling disappointed and wishing the game had been given a chance to grow.

Alongside Outriders 2, People Can Fly also cancelled another project called Bifrost. This game was described by insiders as a generic, trend-following title without much creativity or internal excitement.

It was reportedly not based on any known franchise and failed to capture enthusiasm even within the studio.

While the cancellation of Bifrost might have been expected given its reception, Outriders 2’s fate is seen as a significant loss for fans of the looter shooter genre. Many believe that People Can Fly and Square Enix had the ingredients for a successful follow-up, making the cancellation feel like a missed opportunity.

another live service dies before hitting the public, i like people can fly but honestly i wasnt sold on my beta participation in Outriders, it felt like a less polished borderlands without the crude humor

I hope this rumor is false. Outriders was a fun game! If they focus on developing a better end game for the launch it would’ve stuck around longer!

I enjoyed outriders so that’s a bummer but, honestly don’t think I was expecting another one.
