One victim and one suspect were hospitalized after a shooting during the "No Kings" protest in downtown Salt Lake City.

The suspect was then taken to the hospital "under police watch" to be treated for serious injuries from a gunshot wound.

Multiple law enforcement units responded to assist SLCPD, including the Utah Highway Patrol and the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Prior to the shooting, police said the protest was peaceful and there was no indication of any problems.

"The shooting at tonight’s protest in Salt Lake City is a deeply troubling act of violence and has no place in our public square.

"The violence we’ve seen today in Salt Lake City and elsewhere in the country is horrific—it’s just not who we are," Mendenhall said.

"Thank you to the Salt Lake City Police Department for their quick action tonight to protect lives and support those marching peacefully. »

Man accused of driving through crowd of protesters in Culpeper

A man was arrested for reckless driving and is accused of intentionally driving into a group of people leaving a protest today, Culpeper police said.

The Culpeper Police Department said officers were monitoring the area as the protest ended when 21-year-old Joseph R. Checklick Jr. of Culpeper "intentionally" accelerated an SUV into the dispersing crowd.

The Culpeper Police Department said this is an active and ongoing investigation and is asking witnesses to come forward. »
