I’ve toured perhaps fourteen Mexican archaeological sites from a variety of cultures, and this experience was amazing.
On the first day, I toured the site on foot, with a brilliant and knowledgeable guide - one who actually had a degree in archaeology - and that was a wonderful experience in its own right.. Then three days later I got up at 4:30 AM in order to get to the dawn launch of a flotilla of colorful balloons, and we all spent about 90 minutes soaring over this astonishing site like gods!
This experience is incredible and I recommend anyone to do if you get a chance!
I did it in 2019, booked it through Viator and got picked up close to my hotel in Mexico City at like 4am. About an hour drive to the aerodrome, took off just before sunrise and then the sunrise reveals the ancient site below you! It's truly special.
After landing I took a self guided tour on foot round the site and was even able to climb up the pyramids (climbing no longer allowed now). What an unforgettable day!
