Russian officials say traffic is suspended across Crimea’s Kerch Bridge hours after Ukraine said it struck the bridge with underwater explosives.

Russian media also report that maritime traffic has been suspended in the area.

Ukraine’s strike followed an operation lasting “several months”, Kyiv’s security service says; Moscow has yet to comment.

Ukraine’s security service says it has hit a strategic road and rail bridge linking Russia to occupied Crimea below the water level with explosives.

It says 1,100kg of explosives had been placed deep under water over the course of several months and detonated remotely before 05:00 local time this morning.

It claims the bridge’s underwater pillars have been damaged.

The bridge was built by Russia after it announced Crimean Peninsula part of Russia in 2014, and is a hated symbol among many Ukrainians.

Is it just me or has Russia been unusually quiet about their recent de-pantsing? Usually, there's some whiny statement acting like Ukraine fighting back is some kind of atrocity against peace-loving peoples.

Took them long enough....

"Hey Ivan, should we not close the bridge?"

"Nah, let a few trucks through to see if it holds first."
