IIRC Anne Frank and MLK were born the same year. Seeing that always makes this feel so surreal and not that far away yet people want to deny or excuse - it’s nutty.

Not just the sole survivor of his family, but the sole survivor of ALL the occupants of “The Secret Annex.”

As many times I’ve heard the story and seen the pictures (and it’s a lot—attended Jewish day school) so that I’ve been somewhat desensitized, I am never not moved to think about the reality of being the only person in your family who survived a horrific trauma. And like all the little things you wouldn’t think about but that would be very obvious when you are the only one left.

Like how I kept forgetting my grandpa died, but times 100. I didn’t really forget, but it would occasionally just reoccur to me as if for the first time out of nowhere. Like hey remember, your grandpa is dead. It was horrible every time. It being your whole family seems pretty unbearable.
