Rep. Jasmine Crockett said she will seek to become the top Democrat in the House Oversight Committee after the death of Rep. Gerry Connolly.
Speaking to MSNBC, Crockett said "there ill have to be an election to determine who is going to lead the Oversight Committee" and "ultimately I'm hoping and praying that my colleagues see I can provide what we need as a team to make sure we can move forward and instill some confidence in the American people.
BREAKING: In a stunning moment, Jasmine Crockett just announced that when Democrats win the House, they will investigate Donald Trump’s corruption. Let’s go. pic.twitter.com/PtNUu6gNgW — Democratic Wins Media (@DemocraticWins) May 25, 2025
Connolly, who was 75 years old, was elected into the House in 2008 and served until his death. He stepped down from his post in late April after announcing his cancer had returned. There was speculation that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) could run to lead the committee after failing to beat Connolly for the post last year.
However, the lawmaker said she won't seek the post as she believes she would again face long odds against a more senior member of the party. "It's actually clear to me that the underlying dynamics in the caucus have not shifted with respect to seniority as much as I think would be necessary, and so I believe I'll be staying put at Energy and Commerce," the lawmaker told reporters in early May, referring to the post she did get on that committee.
Crockett, however, is moving forward with her candidacy and anticipated her willingness to investigate President Donald Trump should Democrats retake the House of Representatives in next year's midterm elections.
In another passage of the interview Crockett said she "fully anticipates" Democrats will retake the Lower House next year, and "guaranteed" that lawmakers "will do what we are supposed to do as constitutionally sworn members of the House."
"We will investigate, look at whether or not the president himself has violated the emoluments clause as relates to, say, such things as getting a $400 million plane from the Qataris," Crockett added. She then mentioned other potential topics of investigation, including the dinner offered for top holders of Trump's cryptocurrency.
"There is no shortage of things for us to dig into and determine whether there were not only violations of our law but of our Constitution as well," Crockett added.

We gotta get these younger adult Americans into positions of power, they’re smarter and infinitely less corrupt than those that hold power now.
It’s really, really easy to see heart in people when they’re trying to show it. These people are passionate and they’re ready to fight dirty back. Crockett is absolutely correct, she can provide and we need that type of leadership.
I think we need to take a page from Republicans’ book and start looking at candidates that don’t necessarily know every law in and out, but candidates that instead correctly represent who we are and what we want.
That’s what Trump is, he’s not smart nor does he know the law, but he does do a fantastic job of representing what his base wants. People like Crockett do that while also being smart and knowing the law.
America isn’t centrist. We are a divided nation, we just need to accept that half of us are just gonna be pissy about basic human rights and not give them the room they want to start taking those away because of their own hate and bias. They are wrong, and we need someone in the driver seat who isn’t afraid to say that.

I hope she wins that seat! However, is there an ancient Democratic Congressman with a terminal illness that would better serve as Chair of the Oversight Committee until his imminent death?
