Very cool! I remember going on a field trip in elementary school to look for these after a canal was dug. The land exposed by the lowered water level was rich with these guys and a couple other types of fossilized sea creatures

Very cool find. I looked it up, belemnites are extinct squid like animals. They lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The fossils are also known as bullet stones because of their tapered shape.

In Sweden, we call these "vätteljus" (roughly "elf/fairy candles").

In semi-olden times (well into the 1800's), people would use them as decoys to prevent elves from sucking on their children's fingers while they slept. According to some records, they were even sold at apothecary stores.
