Years ago, when visiting relatives in a tiny Vermont town literally a mile from the Canadian border, I stopped at a small store to grab a few snacks for the drive. They had a sign in the window saying Canadian currency welcome, so I paid with a Canadian $20. To my surprise they gave me my change in Canadian. They had a special stash in the register for Canadian currency.

Wait, what? Canada accepts US currency? Is this common?
Edit: I now know that it is common in border areas in both Canada and Mexico, as well as areas with a lot of American tourists.

They get really annoyed really quickly. Go to the bank down the street
