The earthquake resulted in at least 186 deaths: 181 in Myanmar and five in Thailand.
The strike-slip faulting shock achieved a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent). It was the most powerful earthquake to strike Myanmar since the 1912 Maymyo earthquake which measured 7.9.
