The latest data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reveals a significant surge in renewable energy production, which increased by nearly 10% in 2024.
Renewable sources now account for almost a quarter of the country’s electrical generation, marking a notable shift towards sustainable energy practices amidst ongoing debates regarding energy policies.
Among these renewable sources, solar energy has emerged as the fastest-growing segment, exemplifying the nation’s commitment to clean energy. According to the SUN DAY Campaign’s review of the EIA’s “Electric Power Monthly”, utility-scale and small-scale solar production combined saw an impressive growth rate of 26.9% compared to 2023.

The importance of sustainable energy sources becomes ever clearer
This surge suggests a burgeoning acceptance of solar technology, which now represents approximately 7% of total electrical generation in the U.S., a significant milestone for the sector.
In particular, utility-scale solar thermal and photovoltaic technologies expanded by 32%, while small-scale solar installations, including residential rooftop systems, grew by 15.3%.
Notably, in December alone, utility-scale solar generation outpaced previous records, expanding by 42% compared to December 2023. Such rapid growth highlights an increasing reliance on solar energy as part of the U.S. energy landscape.
Wind energy also continues to play a pivotal role, with production increasing by 7.7% in 2024, making wind the largest contributor within the renewable sector at 10.3% of total electricity generation.
Combined, the output from wind and solar sources now exceeds coal generation by 15.9%, edging closely to the contributions from nuclear energy, which stands at 17.2%.
Despite these advancements, the shadow of previous administration policies looms large. Efforts by the Trump administration to undermine renewable energy initiatives have raised concerns about the long-term implications for the nation’s electricity supply and overall economic health. As the U.S. makes strides toward a greener future, the importance of sustainable energy sources becomes ever clearer.
