Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 launched in October 2024, quickly attracting a large number of players. However, recent data shows a significant decline in its player base on Steam.
In January 2025, the game averaged 62,010 players on Steam, marking its third-lowest month since release. This is a sharp drop from its peak of over 315,000 concurrent players shortly after launch. The decline is notable, especially considering that previous titles like Modern Warfare 3 maintained higher player counts longer after release.
Several factors may have contributed to this downturn. Players have expressed dissatisfaction with issues such as skill-based matchmaking, expensive microtransactions, and the use of AI-generated artwork. Additionally, some new maps introduced in Season 2 were criticized for being ‘claustrophobic’ and catering to a less strategic playstyle.
Despite efforts by Activision and Treyarch to address these concerns, including banning over 65,000 accounts for cheating and boosting, many players feel these measures are insufficient. The rapid decline in player numbers suggests that more substantial changes may be necessary to regain and retain the community’s interest.
The situation highlights the challenges faced by live-service games in maintaining player engagement over time. As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, developers must adapt to player feedback and industry trends to sustain their player bases.

Game catering to cracked out, Adderall Infused, caffeine addicts.
Lost that special sauce and feels like too much. Maybe that's just nostalgia talking though
