Marilyn and her were separated as children. She had a mostly normal childhood, but Marilyn unfortunately did not.
Berniece was raised by her father. Marilyn was born 7 years later to a different father, and was raised in 12 foster homes and an orphanage, as her father never claimed her and her mother was committed to a mental institution.
The sisters didn't know the other existed until 1944, when their mother sent a letter to Berniece telling her that she had a sister.
They stayed in touch for the rest of Marilyn's life. Berniece was the only family Marilyn ever really knew.
