This historic photo (late 19th/early 20th century) shows two boys exposed to smallpox. The boy on the left was unvaccinated and developed severe smallpox, while the boy on the right was vaccinated and remained healthy. This image was widely used in medical literature to demonstrate the effectiveness of vaccination. Thanks to efforts like this, smallpox was officially eradicated in 1980—the only human disease ever wiped out.
When I first started working in hospitals and the antivax movement started to get some traction posters like this were plastered everywhere. We should do that more again and have pro vaccine groups run ads on TVs, billboards, etc. again so people can get a reminder.
What they don't say is the kid of the left keeps those scars forever. Even though adulthood. I used to work with a guy just like him. Couldn't see a clean patch of skin anywhere. People would avoid him like the plague. We worked at Walmart lol I knew he wasn't dangerous if he was there, sitting in the break room eating his lunch. I made friends Right away. He was sweet for an old man. Always a handshake and a hug if I had the time. It wasn't fair. He was awesome and people wouldn't even sit at the same table with him. I just couldn't eat lunch with friends and watch him sitting alone everyday.
