This perfectly reflects the current state of America. The flags have always been there, but usually kept in the shadows by the force of social pressure.
With Trump winning the election, the bigots are all testing the waters to see what the new normal is. But being cowards, they usually give themselves an out in case they miscalculate.
For this guy, that means having the option to drop the shades at a moment's notice. For Elon, that means maintaining plausible deniability when he starts throwing out crisp Nazi salutes on national television.
Thing is, Elon's obvious agitation, psyching himself up to "really do it" gave the game away. He lacked adequate mastery over his own body to pull it off convincingly, the way he practiced.
Now he gets to learn a lesson he should have figured out day one in this country: here, we hate Nazis.
