This reminds me of "Lock In" by John Scalzi. High quality scans of crime scenes are used to investigate long after the actual location is cleaned up.

This is only a couple scenes from the book. The overall premise is far more interesting. But reconstructing crime scenes to put a judge in the heat of the moment... Wild times we're living in
