Hmmm.... this has happened before somewhere in that region. From dictatorship to fundamentalist religious nuts. Resulting in more suffering than ever before for the people.

People's gathering on Sergel's square celebrates the fall of al-Assad

Published yesterday 14:39

On Sunday, hundreds gathered at Sergel's square in Stockholm to celebrate the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's relinquishment of power.

We have waited so long. The last few days we haven't been able to sleep, says Nawar, who fled Damascus in 2021.

29-year-old Nawar has just jumped down from her partner Abdulhalim's shoulders in the middle of the celebration at Sergel's Square in Stockholm. The feelings cannot be described, they say. Now they want to be involved in rebuilding Syria.

We will not allow a new government like this. The people will not accept it.

The same says Kamar Hawa, who with tears in her eyes but a big smile sings along to the songs.

I am so happy, but also very worried. I have not been in touch with my friends and relatives for four days. I don't know if they are alive.

Amr Homedan says it feels like he is in heaven. Now he is just waiting for the situation in his home country to calm down, so that he can return.

I want to be part of the reconstruction, says Amr Homedan, who is there with his mother and sister.

How Syria will look under the rebel groups remains to be seen. Much is still uncertain. But for Amr Homedan, it is a matter for the future. Today it will be celebrated.

It can never get worse than under al-Assad.

Sunday's general gathering at Sergel's Square at 2 p.m. was originally authorized for another group. With the sudden turn of events in Syria and the fall of al-Assad in Damascus in eight, the group chose to leave the permission to the Syrian celebration.

The celebration is also clearly visible in Malmö. A large number of people have gathered there outside the Triangle shopping center in the central city to share the joy that the Assad regime has fallen.

Now we don't want to think about what will happen in the future, but just celebrate that he is gone. It is his fault that people have had to flee, says one of the participants.

It's a fun atmosphere, they sing, dance and shoot rockets. In the streets, caravans of cars are seen driving around, honking their horns and waving flags out of the car windows. The police are on the scene.

May Samhouri has donned the outfit her mother received as a wedding present.

What better occasion to wear it than this.

She continues:

It is incomprehensible. We have been waiting for over 50 years, ever since the Baath Party took over. I had hope when Bashar took over, but it quickly turned into brutality.

Let's just hope whoever is in charge next isn't going to oppress women and use religion to justify shitty behavior.

Edit: i didn't realize that wishing people better lives was such an extreme take.

Edit 2: Fuck me, just say you all hate brown people and stop arguing with me.
