It’s really crazy how close this was to being a much worse strategic debacle for the US.
As awful as this was, we were incredibly lucky to have lost no aircraft carriers, because all three of the pacific fleets carriers were out of port at the time. Nobody really knew it at the time for sure, but they would turn out to be the future of naval warfare and be the most critical asset in the following battles in the pacific that would turn the tide of the war with japan.
Had those ships been in port and been destroyed, Americas navy would have been at a massive disadvantage going into the war I. The pacific, and things would have played out much differently. We could not have won the battle of midway, for example.
