Ottawa, Ontario

Took these photos for my family group chat on Sunday evening and somehow they have amassed over half a million reactions & 71K shares on Facebook (and counting!) Even the Canadian Space Agency has reached out. I’d never seen clouds like this before, but clearly had no clue how rare they were. Crazy

October 8

On October 10 the Canadian Space Agency tweeted:

Ottawa/Gatineau's skies turned into a Van Gogh painting this week! 🎨 The phenomenon is called Asperitas, and this cloud formation is caused by a current of warm air above a current of cold air. This type of cloud usually forms before thunderstorms.
