Gen Z Democrats are moving to oust their “ossifying” party elders in the hopes that the new generation can help beat Donald Trump’s successor in the next presidential race.

Younger Democrats are concerned that the age of some figures, including Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi, is discouraging voters.

At 82, Mr Biden is the oldest serving president in US history, and faced intense criticism over his age and mental acuity during his campaign earlier this year.

Democrats are now hoping to line up a younger candidate to lead the party as the chairman of the Democratic National Committee ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

“It is a huge problem in the Democratic Party that we have such an ossifying class of leadership that it needs to become a crisis before they leave,” one party operative told Politico on Tuesday.

Contenders for the chairmanship include Ben Wikler, a 43-year-old progressive Democrat who allies believe will inject life into the party’s headquarters.

David Hogg, a Gen Z gun rights activist, is thought to be in contention for deputy chairman. »
