Jenna and Mitchell Brotherson have been married for four years—but, if it weren’t for a skiing accident, they might have never walked down the aisle. In February 2020, Jenna broke up with Mitchell because she was “too overwhelmed with life,” according to People. The following day, Mitchell went skiing in Utah on Beaver Mountain. The conditions were “super icy,” according to Jenna, so when Mitchell was going off of a jump, he landed on his head and completely blacked out. When he woke up, paramedics were taking him down the slope—and he had zero memory of how or why it was happening.
After he received medical attention at the hospital, Mitchell tried calling Jenna to pick him up since he wasn’t able to drive. But, since his concussion impaired his memory, he had no idea Jenna had dumped him the day before. “I’m like, ‘Why is he messaging me this? I just broke up with him,’” Jenna revealed on TikTok.
After getting a concussion, Mitchell—who still thought he was dating Jenna—continued to text her, as if everything was normal. “I was confused as to why he would keep messaging me because we had broken up,” she told People. “I thought that maybe he took the statement of staying friends really seriously.”
Assuming they were on the friendship level and unaware of his faulty memory, Jenna reciprocated. “It even was to the point when I told him that my roommates and I had a hard day and he came and brought us ice cream,” she revealed. Because Mitchell continued to be “kind and thoughtful” during their conversations and wanted to help her navigate the challenges in her life instead of being “upset or mean,” the following month, she started to have second thoughts about breaking up with him.
In March 2020, after returning from a spring break trip, Jenna planned on getting back together with Mitchell. After he texted her to hang out, she was ready to have the conversation. "I was nervous to swallow my pride and ask if he would date again," Jenna admitted. That evening, she asked Mitchell if he'd want to start dating again. “That was when I realized he had no clue we even broke up," Jenna revealed.
To jog his memory, she explained how the conversation went down. "I told him about how we were in my car and what I said to him and what he said back,” she said. “He told me he didn’t remember any of that except for chatting in the car, but he didn’t remember what we chatted about. He thought it was super funny, and I was relieved. It made it easy to get back together because to him, we never weren’t together!"
Five months later, Mitchell proposed to Jenna, and they married less than three weeks later in Draper, Utah, on September 4, 2020. "During my husband’s speech, he brought up not remembering the breakup but how he is so grateful that it all worked out in the end," Jenna shared. "We are both 27 now, and when people ask us about our love story, it’s our favorite part to tell. We really felt invisible strings pulling us together all along."
