It was just yesterday that the news broke regarding the (now former) team working on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. It was claimed that the team had been disbanded and that a sequel pitch for the game had been shot down by Ubisoft, who had reportedly ‘made it clear’ just weeks after the game was released that these very steps would be on the cards.
Now, Insider Gaming is exclusively reporting that former Prince of Persia team members have migrated to other projects—one is working on a Rayman Remake. But not all is sunshine and rainbows.
Per our sources close to the situation, the unannounced Rayman Remake is under development with the codename ‘Project Steambot’, and it’s being pieced together by a team located primarily at Ubisoft Milan. This studio has directly contributed to the creation of more than two dozen Ubisoft games over a twenty-year window.
Our sources have also confirmed that Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman (and other franchises like Beyond Good & Evil), is in place as a consultant. This has raised some concerns among team members, least of all because Ancel found himself embroiled in a ‘toxic leadership’ debacle pioneered by a French news outlet in 2020.
That is enough to have cast a less-than-popular light on the Rayman Remake project internally at Ubisoft, even if Ancel is only on board from a consultancy perspective.
It has been estimated that around a dozen developers from the disbanded Prince of Persia team have migrated to work on the Rayman Remake. Elsewhere, other developers have pivoted to work on Beyond Good & Evil 2 and the next Ghost Recon title.
