From 1950 to 1970, the Vatican sent 3,500 Italian children to America on something called an orphan visa.

Many mothers later went searching for their children, only to discover they had been sent across an ocean.

Piero Davi was one of thousands of children born out of wedlock that the Vatican repackaged as orphans.

Bill Whitaker: It seems that many of these mothers had no idea that their children were being sent to the United States.

Author Maria Laurino uncovered the Vatican's orphan program in her book, "The Price of Children."

To this day, the Church insists the orphan program was the only chance for a new life for these children.
