I worked in a grocery store produce department in the 90s. Specifically Macintosh apples have looked like this even back then, so at least it's nothing new.

Apples self-produce a thin waxy coating which gets washed off in the harvesting/processing process, and most apples are re-coated in a thin wax. I don't know what it is about Macintosh apples, though, that leads to them looking so much more glossy than other apples.

Macintosh is my favorite apple. Bought a baby one to grow a couple years ago. And of course it died. Guna try again this spring.
