Police in Michigan are investigating after a car hit and killed a toddler who appeared to have left her home after being put to bed on Friday.

According to a statement from the Michigan State Police, a 2-year-old girl “got out of her bed and walked out of the house” while her parents were working around the family’s home in Allen Township, a small community about an hour southeast of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Police were called at 8:20 p.m. about a “car versus pedestrian crash” and found the young child in the road. The child was transported to a nearby hospital where, according to the statement, “she succumbed to her injuries.”

Officials believe that the toddler walked into the street and a 38-year-old man driving a 2012 VW Jetta hit her. They said alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash and did not specify if the driver will face any charges.

The driver’s name wasn’t publicly released by MSP.

An autopsy will be performed on the child, Jackson Post Troopers said in the release, and the investigation is ongoing.

If anyone has information about the incident, they’re asked to contact Michigan State Police Jackson Post at 517-780-4580.

A couple of years ago I was a passenger in a car and we were at a stop sign and about to turn onto a fairly busy road. Across the street I noticed a baby climbing down a curb onto the busy road. I was about to jump out of the car and run over, but thankfully before I had a chance a woman coming down that road noticed as well and jumped out of her car to grab the baby.

A few moments later a little girl came out from behind a house she was apparently supposed to be watching the baby. The woman scolded her, but at the same time the girl was way too young to be in charge of watching the baby. I'm sure the woman thought that as well. It was one of the scariest moments of my life, but luckily the baby was okay.

We put slide bolt latches above the children’s reach when they were small for that reason. They aren’t pretty, but if you have little ones, I’d consider it. They always do what you’d least expect.

TL;DR (because no one should have to read stuff like this)

A 2-year-old girl in Michigan was hit and killed by a car after leaving her home late at night. The incident happened in Allen Township, Michigan, after the girl walked out while her parents were working around the house. The toddler was struck by a 38-year-old man driving a VW Jetta. Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash, and it’s unclear if charges will be filed. The police are still investigating, and an autopsy will be performed on the child.
