As the salmon of the Klamath have dwindled, the Yurok tribe has turned to alternative revenue like eco-tourism and canoe tours to support its people.

Salmon are culturally and spiritually significant to the tribe, along with others in the region.

In 2002, a bacterial outbreak caused by low water and warm temperatures killed more than 34,000 fish, mostly Chinook salmon.

But it’s unclear how quickly salmon will return to their historical habitats and the river will heal.

There have already been reports of salmon at the mouth of the river, starting their river journey. »

The outbreak has grown to 57 hospitalizations in 18 states linked to recalled products from the plant.

"This is the largest listeriosis outbreak since the 2011 outbreak linked to cantaloupe," the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.

Samples from unopened products distributed from the Boar's Head plant were found by authorities in multiple states to be contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. »
