This post is missing quite a bit of important context. John Braun was one of Trump’s last minute pardons. Now, you might ask, why would Trump pardon a drug dealer? Well, first, he wasn’t just in jail for dealing drugs. He was a loan shark. The kind of loan shark that threatens his customers with violence if they didn’t pay up. Shortly after his release, his company was banned from making such loans and ordered to repay high interest to the small businesses they made such loans to.
But that’s just background. You see, it turns out that at the time of his 11th hour pardon, he was in negotiations with the Justice Department to be a cooperating witness in an investigation into predatory lenders in the merchant cash advance industry (think paycheck advance, but for businesses). It seems Braun and his family had ties to both Jared Kushner and Alan Dershowitz, both well known Trump loyalists and confidants, and used these connections to receive a pardon. The Justice Department had no knowledge of the pardon until it happened, and as soon as it did, lost all leverage in negotiations, losing him as a cooperating witness.
So, at best, it sounds like Trump abused his power as a favor to his buddies Kushner and Dershowitz. At worst, he knowingly crippled a federal investigation, which would beg the question “Why?”
And now, just a few years removed from being pardoned by a POTUS claiming to be tough on crime, this dude assaults his wife and her 75 year old father.
