This guy was a total unknown for most of us Europeans.
But he makes it really easy to understand why he is where he finds himself to be. The man feels like a real throwback to the mental image we used to have of an average American, several decades ago.
He's amazingly triggering for hard core right wingers because in their view he "should" be one of them but has betrayed them, in their view. He's a great example of a pretty traditional Midwestern guy who doesn't have to belong to the right wing death cult.
A return to FDR era view that the government can do stuff for people, with the improvement of removing the racism from that era.
Which of course means the right wing will label it as communist.
