In 2014, Van de Velde, aged 19, met with a 12-year-old girl who sent him a friend request on Facebook. In August 2014, aware of her age, he travelled to her home town, Milton Keynes, gave her alcohol and raped her.[5] The girl had told her parents she was visiting a friend.[6][unreliable source] That same night, Van de Velde tried to stay at a hotel with his victim but was denied a room, so they slept under a staircase.[7] There were two instances of rape the next day.[5] During one of the three rapes, the victim told Van de Velde that he was hurting her.[8] Van de Velde returned to the Netherlands after the rapes[9] and told his victim to go to a sexual health clinic for contraception.[8] He was extradited to the United Kingdom and arrested in January 2016.[9] The victim expressed feelings of guilt, and had been self-harming and once overdosed.
I am honestly happy he was able to go to the olympics. This case flew pretty much under the radar and he managed to get off very lightly. If it wasn't for the olympics the international media wouldn't have picked up on this story yet now the entire world knows exactly who convicted child rapist and pedophile Steven Van de Velde is.
He has clearly learned nothing from the experience. From a 2017 BBC story:
A children's charity has condemned comments from Dutch volleyball player Steven Van de Velde after his early release from a prison sentence for the rape a 12-year-old British girl.
He was jailed for four years last March after admitting three counts of rape against a child in Milton Keynes.
He was allowed to return to the Netherlands to complete his sentence and has been released after a year.
The NSPCC said his "lack of remorse and self-pity is breathtaking".
