I took "Backpacking on Catalina Island" around 1977. An elective at Cal State Fullerton. Great weekend. Fun tip. Buy a few bucks worth of fish food at the concrete pier. Thousands of fish swarm up from the kelp forest. Keep dribbling in food and the big ones will also appear.
The Catalina wine mixer is a real event, but it was created after step brothers afaik
There is a population of wild Buffalo on the island - they are big and they are not friendly
There are beach campsites available across both sides of the island if you have a boat that can access them. It’s some of the best camping I’ve ever done.
There is a trail that runs the entire length of the island - about 38.2 miles.
