The Secret Service is investigating how the man who shot Trump got as close as he did.

The gunman, who was killed by Secret Service personnel, fired multiple shots at the stage from an "elevated position outside of the rally venue," the agency said.

The roof was less than 150 meters (yards) from where Trump was speaking, a distance from which a decent marksman could reasonably hit a human-sized target.

The AR-15, like the shooter at the Trump rally had, is the semi-automatic civilian version of the military M16.

The Secret Service didn't have anybody at a late-night news conference where FBI and Pennsylvania State Police officials briefed reporters on the shooting investigation.

"We condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms and commend the Secret Service for their swift action today," Mayorkas said.

The FBI said it will lead the investigation into the shooting, working with the Secret Service and local and state law enforcement. »

California Rep. Ted Lieu wants to know why Donald Trump’s ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein aren’t getting more media coverage.

At a news conference on Tuesday, Lieu brought up newly unsealed court documents that he suggested highlight Trump’s relationship with Epstein, the convicted sex offender.

Trump’s ties to Epstein seem deserving of further scrutiny, though, and that he’s been allowed to avoid addressing them is a media failure. »

‘Goldmine’ collection of wheat from 100 years ago may help feed the world, scientists say

This wheat was derived from wild varieties that were originally domesticated and cultivated in the Fertile Crescent in the Middle East, 10,000 years ago.

Astonishingly, this data revealed that modern wheat varieties only make use of 40% of the genetic diversity found in the collection.

“We have found that the Watkins collection is packed full of useful variation which is simply absent in modern wheat,” said Griffiths. »
