Young voters are overwhelmingly backing President Joe Biden ahead of the 2024 election, according to a new poll.

The CBS News/YouGov survey found former president Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, had a narrow lead over Biden among likely voters, 50 percent to 49 percent. However, Biden has a 23-point lead when the poll's results are filtered to consider the views of voters aged between 18 and 29.

The poll found 61 percent of likely voters under 30 said they would vote for Biden if the election were held today, while 38 percent said they would vote for Trump. About 60 percent of people aged 18 to 29 voted for Biden in the 2020 election.

The poll surveyed 2,460 adults between June 17 and 21, including an oversample of 743 adults aged 18 to 29. The margin of error for the total sample is 2.8 points, and 5.2 points for the adults aged 18 to 29.

The poll found that about half of young voters feel the age of Biden and Trump—Biden is 81 and Trump is 78—make them out of touch with younger people. Some 48 percent of voters under 30 think neither Biden nor Trump understand the needs and concerns of younger people, while 26 percent of younger voters said only Biden understands their needs, while 20 percent said only Trump does.

It also found that only 17 percent of younger voters were excited about the candidates running for president, while 37 percent were disappointed.

Asked for comment, Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung pointed to polling from May that showed Trump leading Biden in five battleground states.

Newsweek has contacted the Biden campaign for comment via email.

Most recent polls show that the November election remains tight, with Biden and Trump statistically tied or holding only narrow leads in surveys, even after Trump was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records at the end of May. Trump has denied wrongdoing, and he will be sentenced in July.

Meanwhile, the Biden campaign is working to energize young voters, faced with concerns that he is losing support among the crucial voting bloc for Democrats, particularly because of anger over his handling of his handling of Israel's war in Gaza.

Biden also often touts his work on student debt on the campaign trail. His administration is moving forward with a new plan for mass debt cancellation after the Supreme Court struck down his first attempt last year, and has separately erased student debt for more than 4 million people through existing programs.

Last month, he moved to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug.

Sadly, youth voters are one of the the least reliable categories for actually showing up to the election.

I’m looking forward to President Biden crushing Trump at the debate too.
