Canceled Cyberpunk 2077 Expansion Titled ‘The Moon’ Has Leaked Online

Files from an alleged canceled expansion for CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077, titled The Moon, have leaked online.

A 4chan member has shared images from a work-in-progress build of an alleged expansion to Cyberpunk 2077, titled The Moon. The unannounced DLC was later canceled due to unknown reasons. They mentioned that these leaked files are part of the data that was stolen via a security breach of CD Projekt servers back in 2021.

The leaker mentioned that there were many interesting things among the stolen data that essentially got overlooked, and the focus largely remained on a third person alpha build from 2013. They pointed out that it was originally planned for Cyberpunk 2077 to receive multiple expansions, and not just Phantom Liberty. The Moon was allegedly set to be the game’s second expansion akin to The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine, adding an entirely new location to the world map. The leaker clarified that information wasn’t data mined and was already present in the stolen files.

The leaker speculated that the canceled expansion would have taken place during another corporate war or a covert operation. They pointed out that there are multiple indications throughout the base game suggesting that the fictional world is on a brink of another corporate war and that relations between corps are very tense. It’s possible that the development team will explore this plot element in the game’s sequel.

Recently, in its financial report for the first quarter of the year 2024, CD Projekt Group had shared that support work on Cyberpunk 2077 ended after its most recent update. By February 29, 2024, only 17 people from the studio’s development team were involved with rolling out content updates and bug fixes. The game’s first and only expansion, Phantom Liberty, was released on September 25, 2023, after which there wasn’t much work left for a majority of the team, which by then had moved over to work on Project Polaris.
