Reading the transcript of his broadcast during the breaching of the Capitol is truly inspiring. The man was barricaded in his office with nothing but a radio, and he spent his last moments as president reminding his people that there was a light at the end of the tunnel, and to keep hope. Chile then spent the next decades under a brutal totalitarian military dictator, explicitly backed by the United States, answerable to no one.
Salvador’s niece is the novelist Isabel Allende, and her book Of Love and Shadows is a fictionalized account of life in the immediate aftermath of the coup.
