The development of Seattle is that the city underwent a massive regrading project in the early 20th century known as the "Denny Regrade." This ambitious engineering feat involved flattening several of Seattle's hills, including the removal of an entire hill called Denny Hill. The project used high-pressure water hoses (hydraulic sluicing) to wash away the soil, which was then transported via a system of sluices and dumped into Elliott Bay. The regrading significantly altered the city's landscape, making it easier to build and navigate, and transformed Seattleā€™s topography to accommodate its growing population and infrastructure needs.
