this has to do with how much dedication the Colombian government poured into combatting the cartels AND the fact that the Mexican cartels moved in and took a lot of. business from the Colombians and all of the violence Colombia experienced in the 90s is now in Mexico.

Spent several weeks in Bogota and Medellin last year. Very safe, amazing cities. I'd tell people there that my friends were worried about my safety there. They'd respond "You're American, right? The place where kids regularly get shot in school and you don't do anything about it?"
