Did you notice if it was a snapping turtle? They are fucking nuts, at my cottage they will crawl probably 150m vertical drop, up a mountain about 1km away from the damn lake. All that just to have the fucking racoons pillage the eggs.
The ones that nest around the cottage we will sometimes put wire mesh large enough for the hatchlings to crawl out but to attempt to thwart the racoons efforts.
