I'm a doctor. Just to head off some questions, here's what happened:
OP tore a muscle in his arm.
This can lead to some pretty gnarly bruising in regular people, but he (at the time) had end stage liver disease. The liver makes most of your clotting factors. With impaired blood clotting gnarly bruising can turn into holy fuck bruising, which is what you see here.
OP has since gotten a liver transplant and is better now.

My nephew had a bruise like this - he has a clotting disorder and Ehlers Danlos and pulled a door open too hard.
