Cyberpunk 2077 was released back in 2020, and after a rocky launch, CD Projekt managed to fix most of the game. Now, as of April 2024, the development team has moved on to other projects, leaving behind Cyberpunk 2077.

While this ends any hope for another DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, it means that the development team is now focused on Project Orion and Polaris.

According to CD Projekt RED’s financials, as of April 30, 2024, development on Cyberpunk 2077 has ceased. The focus is now on Project Orion, which is the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, and Project Polaris, the next Witcher game.

An interesting thing to note is that most of the workforce is dedicated to The Witcher. A total of 407 developers are working on the next Witcher game. What does that mean? It means The Witcher will release before the next Cyberpunk game.

Project Sirius has 39 developers working on it right now. It is a multiplayer Witcher spin-off currently in development at CD Projekt RED.

Project Polaris is the codename for the next major installment in The Witcher series. It will be the beginning of a new trilogy set in the same universe. The project is currently in the production phase as of 2024, with plans to significantly ramp up development throughout the year.

More than half of CD Projekt RED’s workforce is dedicated to Project Polaris, with over 400 developers actively working on it. This makes it the largest project in terms of team size within the studio.

Polaris will be built using Unreal Engine 5, moving away from CD Projekt RED’s proprietary REDengine. This switch aims to leverage the advanced features and open-world support provided by Unreal Engine 5, facilitated through a strategic partnership with Epic Games.

Although no specific release date has been confirmed, industry analysts anticipate that the first game in the Polaris trilogy could be released around 2026 or 2027.

The teaser image for The Witcher 4, associated with Project Polaris, features a medallion shaped like a lynx, indicating a new direction in the storyline. This suggests the introduction of the School of the Lynx, a concept largely rooted in fan fiction rather than the established Witcher canon.

I hope they will give us proper modding tools at least. They did for Witcher 3. It would be foolish not to release it for CP when the modding scene is as active as it is even without proper tools.

They gave a good DLC and fixed most of the game. Time to move on. Bring on The Witcher.

All focus now on the next Witcher and Cyberpunk sequel. 407 devs on The Witcher game.
