Steam is the biggest launcher for PC. Its massive fanbase prevents any other launcher from gaining popularity on the PC platform, while Valve’s incredible services keep fans satisfied.
This launcher offers everything a gamer wants, making it a fan favorite. While this launcher is currently limited to PC, Microsoft may be planning to bring Steam to the next Xbox.
Why it matters: Having Steam on a console could be a game changer since it would open the ecosystem further in multiple ways.
The discussion started amid potential talks of Microsoft purchasing Valve for $16 billion. While this is unlikely to happen since Valve generates about $1 billion yearly from CS cases alone, insider Jez Corden added his two cents to the discussion.
He believes Steam will already be part of the next generation of Xbox consoles.

One benefit of this move for Microsoft would be access to all of Steam’s library for Xbox users. For instance, through this move, every PlayStation Studios game on PC, including the successful Ghost of Tsushima, would become playable on Microsoft hardware.
However, it could also prove detrimental to Xbox’s ecosystem due to better pricing and promotions on Steam.
Interestingly, Phil Spencer has already shown interest in bringing various storefronts to Xbox. Therefore, Steam might not be the only launcher introduced to the next generation of Xbox.
Xbox’s next console is said to be targeting a 2026 release. The gaming giant is also said to be working on a handheld, making the future quite exciting. If true, adding Steam could become a major selling point for Microsoft’s gaming hardware, giving it a key edge over the competition.

Microsoft seems like they have no idea what they’re doing. First they start a console. Then they realize that they can’t sell them because they don’t make many good first or second party games games. So they buy a bunch of studios to make their consoles more attractive. Then they decide to make them all multi platform so they can sell more games. Then they decide to support other store’s games making themselves more of a hardware company.
I’m not saying this new strategy is necessarily bad, but they’re all over the place.

Steam support on Xbox would honestly be a huge win.
It’s already «halfway» there with windows handhelds like the ROG Ally, and I love using mine.
