Worse part is Bob Ebeling warned nasa to stop the launch, he noted that because of the low temperature, the launch was at high risk. He pleaded to deaf ears, he even wrote a memo titled HELP!!!!
Everyone of a certain age remembers how much elementary school teachers hyped up the "teacher in space". They brought a TV into the classroom, on a big cart. They had to combine classes, because there weren't enough TV carts for every classroom. We all watched the launch and explosion. The teacher was like "Well, that's not good, but they're probably safe. Ask your parents when you get home, the news will have more information then. Let's do some math."

Watching the actual video of her family experiencing this is heart breaking. The kids in her class were watching it live too.

The first idea for involving space in early education was to send Big Bird into space. They worked on it, but decided the puppet would be impossible to operate in space, so they sent a teacher. Imagine if Big Bird exploded on national TV.
