BOSTON (WHDH) - A driver was placed under arrest Monday morning after she drove through a gate at Fenway Park and crashed into a forklift, officials confirmed.
A Red Sox spokesperson said the crash happened near 8:30 a.m. when a car drove off Lansdowne Street into Fenway Park’s Gate C. The car crashed into a forklift that had been removing staging from a weekend event, according to the spokesperson.
Forklift operator Eric Perlmutter said the driver turned into the ballpark’s loading dock and headed for center field.
“I literally slammed the back of my forklift against her [car] and slammed her into the wall,” Perlmutter said.
He said the driver hit reverse and was trying to get away when a Boston police officer jumped on his forklift and told him to “get her.”
“As she put it in reverse, I slammed the forklift forward, like forward gear, and just went and hit her right in the bumper and just picked her right up about three and a half feet,” Perlmutter said.
Boston police said the driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Red Sox spokesperson said the driver was also arrested.
Bystanders in the area told 7NEWS they saw the driver circling the stadium three times before the crash.
“Had they not stopped her, she’d be out there doing donuts on the field, there’s no doubt,” witness Dan Laurendeau said.
In an update Monday afternoon, Massachusetts State Police said the driver was also believed to be involved in a series of other crashes around the city, including an incident at the US Coast Guard Station in the North End and a hit-and-run at the entrance to the Ted Williams Tunnel in East Boston, where the driver allegedly hit two vehicles and fled the scene.
State police said there were no apparent injuries related to the hit-and-run at the Ted Williams Tunnel.
No further information was immediately available about the incident at the Coast Guard Station.
