Mandatory PSN Accounts Coming Soon to Helldivers 2 PC Players

On May 6, everyone playing Helldivers 2 on PC for the first time will need a PlayStation Network account.

The popular Arrowhead Game Studios launched simultaneously on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam on February 8.

According to a statement by Sony Interactive Entertainment on Steam, Helldivers 2 PC players will need to link their in-game profiles to a PSN account. Sony explains that this is part of “upholding the values of safety and security provided on PlayStation and PlayStation Studios” games.

Apparently, Sony made the linking requirements “temporarily optional” at launch because of “technical issues.”

Now that SIE has solved whatever problems previously made linking PSN accounts to a player’s profile on Steam, the industry-leading console manufacturer is ending the “grace period”, making it mandatory starting on May 30 for current players on Steam – arguably where the more popular half of the player base enjoys fighting against Terminids and Automatons.

TLDR; new Helldivers 2 players on PC from May 6 onwards will need to link their PSN and Steam accounts to play the game. But, existing defenders of Super Earth won’t see the “mandatory login” until May 30.

What Happens To Regions Without PSN?

To be fair, this isn’t news. Arrowhead and SIE have been transparent about the PSN requirements since the game came out. It was only a matter of time before it became compulsory. But, while this is true, SIE and Arrowhead forgot that not every region in the world supports PSN.

So far, PSN is available in less than 70 countries. This is nearly a third of the number of independent countries around the world.

Countries such as the Philippines, the entire Africa outside of South Africa, Egypt, and a handful of other countries like Belarus, don’t have PSN.

A potential solution is to create an account in a supported region. But, Sony reserves the right to ban your account for falsifying personal information. You’ll also have to pay in the currency of your chosen country. This may make microtransactions more expensive.

Arrowhead and Sony don’t appear to have figured out this part of the PSN linking yet.
