Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is easily one of the most talked about games in recent memory. The critically acclaimed sequel was beloved by fans and critics alike when it came out on PlayStation 5 on February 29. Despite the noise surrounding its launch, Square Enix has been oddly silent about its sales numbers and we might finally know why.
Circana Executive Director Mat Piscattela recently teased in a now-deleted post on X that he plans to release “something about the performance of the new title in the major RPG franchise” this Wednesday.
Piscatella then used the Ralph Wiggum “I’m in danger” meme from Family Guy.
This viral meme is used to describe situations where something has not gone according to plan.
However, Matt has already deleted the post on X for an unknown reason. It’s possible he may no longer release the report.
If he does, then it’ll be interesting to see what his findings are.
The first game in the remake trilogy, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, sold 3.5 million copies in three days in 2020. Finally, Final Fantasy 16, which came out last year, sold 3 million in a week. Both figures are enough to make each game one of the fastest-selling titles on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, respectively.
What Can Square Enix Do To Boost Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s Sales?
Square Enix has a reputation for setting high expectations for its games. Over the years, it has described the sales of fan-favorite games like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Hitman: Absolution, Sleeping Dogs, Tomb Raider, and many more, as disappointing.
Most recently, Square Enix shut down Luminous Productions after the low sales figures of its debut title, Forspoken.
With that said, Final Fantasy is Square Enix’s golden ticket. In particular, Final Fantasy 7 is the most successful entry in the series. With multiple spin-offs that spawned from the original 1997 game, including the ongoing remake trilogy, Square Enix has high expectations for anything related to FF7, including FF7 Rebirth.
If it’s true that Square is struggling to sell FF7 Rebirth, it needs to come up with a better plan to make sure that the final entry in the remake trilogy doesn’t suffer the same fate.
Many are suggesting that releasing the threequel on multiple platforms at launch would help with sales. But, the reality is that each game is a massive time commitment. It doesn’t help that getting the full experience requires having played at least two games beforehand. At the end of the day, FF7 Rebirth was always bound to sell fewer copies compared to Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which came out in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I want to get into it but it feels sort of impenetrable. Some people say you need to play the original or need to do work before you can play even the first remake. I understand why they were broken up but the entire thing feels like a big ask.

It’s a shame considering how much better it is than remake. It feels like they poured so much love into every aspect of the game, hopefully it has long legs sales wise
